Update on Ron

Ron was released from the hospital on March 27th after spending 6 days in the hospital. They did 5 days of high dose IV steroids and put him back on the oral chemo. He has a small amout of coordination issue on his left side but that is improving daily as is his speech. We won't know for another week or two the extent of any long term effects from the newest strokes. I am already noticing some new changes in his personality however I am sure a lot of that can be attributed to the higher dose oral steroids. I will update again after his follow up visit with his doctor. Thank y'all again for all the positive thoughts and encouragement!

Dear Amanda,
Two weeks ago I had never heard of vasculitis. My mother went into hospital on the 28th of march last with severe headache, for 10 days we watched her suffer in agony and become more and more disorientated. loose her visoin and movement. The doctors telling her it was migrane and "panic attacks". It was so frustrating trying to get them to take her seriously, she was a fantastically calm, professional person all her life. Eventually & too late they transferred her to a better hospital who diagnosed vasculitis on tuesday the 7th of april, she was dead within four hours of starting treatment however. My whole family is devastated and we are in shock, only a few weeks ago she was argueing with me over my wanting to interveen and talk to her doctors. It is good to read your story as I can relate to so much of it with your nights in ICU etc. You are soooooo fortunate to have encountered medical professionals who will actually listen. Mum was discharged twice from the ER with migrane tablets when all of us who knew & loved her knew there was something really wrong with her. We will forever question could/should we have done more but they wouldn't listen, even when I went in to see her in hospital only this night two weeks ago to find my dad distraught & mum unable to coordinate any movements and totally blind they were telling us it was side effects of painkillers!! We live in the west of Ireland and even the neuroligist hadn't a clue what was going on. What bothers me most is that they did a spinal tap and MRI early on as well as blood tests as she insisted and I feel they were just humouring her, they said all the results were normal on these tests, I find this very hard to believe when we were witnessing her deterioration at the time. Sorry if I'm depressing you, but it was great to read your blog and relate, I'm going to show my dad tomorrow, he is only 55 and has lost his soul mate in what can only be described as a few weeks from hell, we are all searching for answers. To read of Rons improvments is heartwarming & just makes me wish we could have had a team of doctors who were willing to take us seriously and not try & pass her off as some neurotic woman to be pacified! Sorry to rant, I wish you all the best, you and Ron and will follow your blog. Kind regards,
Grainne
